Mount Abu or just Abu ( Hindi : माउंट आबू) is a mountain town with around 23,000 inhabitants in the Aravalli Mountains in the south of the Indian state of Rajasthan .

Location and climate

Mount Abu is located on a wooded plateau about 1155 m high, about 22 km long and 6 km wide. On the plateau there are numerous small and medium-sized elevations as well as several small lakes, of which Nakki Lake , located on the northwestern edge of the village, is the largest and best known. The journey from the city of Abu Road, which is located on the plain, is only about 33 km long, but usually takes about 2 hours because of the winding route. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 1615 mm / year) falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon season .

Residents 15,593 22,152 22,943

About 89% of the population are Hindus and about 7% are Muslims ; the other religious communities ( Jains , Sikhs , Buddhists and Christians) form small minorities. As usual with censuses in northern India, the male population is numerically around 15% higher than the female.

economy

Despite the high altitude, there is little agriculture in the villages; however, most of the food is transported up the mountain from the plains. By far the most important role in economic life today is played by domestic and international tourism.

history

The mountain landscape in the south of Rajasthan is already mentioned in the ancient Indian texts of the Puranas , the Upanishads and the Mahabharata . According to a legend, this is the place of origin of four Rajput dynasties , all of which emerged from the fire. Mount Abu was once part of the Chauhan Empire, but its capital was relocated to Chandravati on the plains at the beginning of the 14th century . But the regional rulers and finally the British used the place as a summer residence ( hill station ) .

Attractions

Mount Abu is a strongly tourist-oriented small town with hundreds of hotels and guest houses, which is mainly visited by short vacationers from Gujarat and Rajasthan because of the relative coolness that prevails all year round. Among them are many young couples on their honeymoon who spend part of their dowries in the numerous shops of all kinds.

  • Mount Abu is a well-known pilgrimage site for Jains , whose Dilwara temples (Vimal Vasahi and Luna Vasahi) are among the most artistically impressive temples in all of India.
  • The Nakki Lake is the main attraction of the region, according to legend it got its name from a Hindu god who is said to have scratched it out of the rock with his fingernails (nakh) . The riverside path is very scenic and leads past interesting rock formations, the most famous of which is Toad Rock .
Surroundings
  • At dusk, Sunset Point, about 2 km southwest of the city, is the destination of many - mostly Indian - tourists.
  • A trip to Achalgarh , about 10 km to the northeast, is also recommended. Another 10 km north is the Guru Shikhar , which with its 1722  m height forms the highest point in Rajasthan.
