Achalgarh ( Hindi अचलगढ़ ) is a sprawled place with about 350 inhabitants and a Rajput , i. H. Hindu , mountain fortress in the Aravalli Mountains near the city of Mount Abu in the south of the Indian state of Rajasthan .

location

Achalgarh is located about 11 km (driving distance) northeast of Mount Abu at an altitude of about 1300 to 1400 m above sea level. d. M .; There are several small lakes in the area, including the idyllic Mandakini Lake . Because of the altitude, the climate is pleasant; Rain actually only falls in the summer monsoon months .

The villagers are almost exclusively Hindus; the male and female proportions of the population are roughly the same.

history

The mountain fortress, which dates back to the time of the Paramara dynasty, was renewed in 1452 by Rana Kumbha , who also founded the fort of Kumbhalgarh . It later came under the control of the Muslim Sultanate of Gujarat .

  • On the way up to the mountain fortress there is a Hindu Shiva temple ( Achleshwar temple , अचलेश्वर) with a 4 m tall Nandi bull made of brass in front of it - others claim that the figure is made of gold, silver, copper and other metals. Strangely enough, there is no lingam inside the temple, only a yoni with an opening leading into the underworld. A side shrine shows the nine incarnations of Vishnu .
  • A Jain shrine with several Tirthankara images is also along the way up to the mountain fortress; the interior is painted with naive wall paintings from the 19th or early 20th century.
  • In the fort itself, which is surrounded by an outer wall, the remains of two gates ( Hanuman Pol and Champa Pol ) as well as a Jain shrine donated in 1513 can be seen.
