The Nakki Lake ( Hindi नक्की झील Nakkī Jhīl ) is a natural mountain lake near the city of Mount Abu in the Aravalli Mountains in the south of the Indian state of Rajasthan .

The approx. 800 m long, approx. 400 m wide and maximally 24 m deep Nakki Lake is located approx. 1 km west of the city of Mount Abu at an altitude of approx. 1154 m above sea level. d. M.
Legends and history
There are several small mountain lakes in the vicinity of Mount Abu, of which Nakki Lake is the most beautiful. According to a legend, the lake was created by the hand of gods to protect people from the demon Bashkali . According to another legend, a prince named Rasia Balam is said to have dug the lake with his fingernails within one night in order to marry the king's daughter Kunwari Kanya .
On February 12, 1948, some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were scattered into the lake; a staircase ( ghat ) named after him was built on its bank .
Today's meaning
On the shore of the lake there are two modern Hindu temples ( Raghunath Temple and Bharat Mata Mandir ), which, however, go back to older predecessor buildings. Since Mount Abu is popular with many Indians because of its altitude and its pleasant climate, Nakki Lake has also developed into a popular excursion destination. You can hike around it and / or take a small boat tour.
