The Albert-Appel-Haus is a large refuge in the center of the Dead Mountains , near the border between Styria and Upper Austria.

Location, name and history

The Appelhaus is located at 1638 m on the Henaralm. It is at the intersection of many hiking trails through the Dead Mountains (235, 232, 201, E4 Via Alpina ). In addition to the Henaralm, the high valley on the edge of the large Karst plateau includes four other alpine pastures: Brunnwiesenalm, Breitwiesenalm, Augstwiesalm, Wildenseealm . A striking formation nearby is the Redende Stein ( 1900 m ).

It is owned and operated by the Austrian Tourist Association , after whose first chairman Albert Appel (1871–1947) it is named. In 1908, at the suggestion of Leopold Kunschak, he founded the Christian Workers' Tourist Association, which later became the Austrian Tourist Association.

The hut was inaugurated on August 5, 1928 and has since been expanded and renovated several times. In 1977 it was opened up with a six-kilometer-long material ropeway.

Every year in August there is a mountain mass at the hut .
