The Wildenseehütte is an unmanaged refuge of the Austrian Alpine Association in the west of the Dead Mountains in the Styrian Salzkammergut in Austria .

Location and landscape

The Wildenseehütte is located at 1525  m above sea level at the end of the Ausseer Hintertal, on the Wildenseealm not far from the Wildensee . It is located between Schönberg (Wildenkogel2093  m ) and Woising  ( 2064  m ) in the central area of ​​the Dead Mountains.

history

The hut was built in 1920 by the Bad Aussee section of the OeAV and is structurally largely in its original state. It has been operated as a self-catering hut since the beginning.

At the end of World War II , on May 12, 1945, Ernst Kaltenbrunner , chief of the security police and SD and head of the Reich Security Main Office, was arrested together with his adjutant Arthur Scheidler by infantrymen of the CIC under the direction of Robert Matteson at the Wildenseehütte, where they were going fled when US troops arrived.
