On June 17, 1936 Heinrich Himmler was appointed head of the German police in the Ministry of the Interior. In his capacity as Reichsführer SS and Chief of the German Police , he issued a decree on June 26, 1936 that included both the criminal police (Kripo) and the secret state police (Gestapo) in the security police . She was placed under the orders of Heydrich, who was the head of the SD.

By decree of September 27, 1939 (with effect from October 1, 1939), Himmler combined the security police and the security service in the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA). This made Heydrich chief of the security police and the SD.

After Heydrich's death on June 4, 1942 in Prague as a result of an assassination attempt , Himmler was initially acting chief of the security police and the SD. Ernst Kaltenbrunner then held this position from January 30, 1943 until the end of the war .
