Department of Motor Vehicles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Department of Motor Vehicles ( DMV for short ) is the commonly used name for the US motor vehicle registration office . The DMV is operated in the jurisdiction of the individual states and can sometimes have other official names (e.g. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation ).

tasks

Due to the federal jurisdiction, the tasks of the DMV may differ in part.

Vehicle registration ( registration )

One of the tasks of the DMV is to register vehicles, including issuing number plates . Custom license plates (like your own name) are also issued by the DMV for an annual fee (between 10 and 30 US dollars ). Proof of insurance and a valid state inspection are required for registration , which in some states is also carried out by the DMV. The approval is granted for one or two years, after which it must be renewed.

(License license driver's )

The DMV is also responsible for drawing up driver's licenses . At the DMV, both the theoretical (on the computer) and the practical exam are taken. The driving license is issued for a limited period (up to five years), after which it has to be renewed (without examination). In the USA, the driver's license is the predominantly used form of identification , as it also indicates the current residence (to be verified ). In this respect, the DMV also takes on the role of the residents' registration office .
The social security number is no longer noted on the driver's license in order to prevent abuse.
