Cleveland is a city in Bolivar County , Mississippi , United States . As of the 2000 population census, there were 13,842 residents. She is best known for Delta State University . In addition, Cleveland has a relatively large commercial economy, with many restaurants, shops, and services along US Highway 61 . history

Until the middle of the 19th century there was essentially only marshland and reed areas in the area of ​​today's city. The present urban area was infested with malaria right into the 20th century . In the middle of the century, the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway began buying up territories. People gradually settled there, the first house in what is now the city area belonged to a Moses W. Coleman. Today's Cleveland was first called Fontaine (1884) or Coleman's Station. In 1885 the place was named after the largest local landowner Rueben T. Sims. In 1886 it was renamed Cleveland after the US President Grover Cleveland . On August 5, 1887, the United States Post Office recognized Cleveland as a location.
