Lander is the county seat of Fremont County in the US state of Wyoming . The place is named after the explorer Frederick W. Lander . At the time of the United States Census 2010 , the place had 7,487 residents.

history

One of the first rendezvous for fur hunters and trappers took place in the area of ​​the later Lander in 1829 .

On October 1, 1906 Lander was the western terminus of the "Cowboy Line" line designated the Chicago and North Western Railway , on which the motto of the city "where rails end and trails begin" (mutatis mutandis about "where the tracks end and the ( Hiking) trails begin ”) is based. Originally, a transcontinental connection was planned to Coos Bay , Oregon or Eureka , California , but the construction of the route was never continued beyond Lander. In 1972 rail traffic to Lander was also discontinued.

Lander is located in central Wyoming on the banks of the Middle Popo Agie River , east of the Wind River Range and south of the Wind River Indian Reservation . The place is accessed by the US Highway US 287 and several state highways.
