Lander is the county seat of Fremont County in the US state of Wyoming . The place is named after the explorer Frederick W. Lander . At the time of the United States Census 2010 , the place had 7,487 residents.
history
One of the first rendezvous for fur hunters and trappers took place in the area of the later Lander in 1829 .
On October 1, 1906 Lander was the western terminus of the "Cowboy Line" line designated the Chicago and North Western Railway , on which the motto of the city "where rails end and trails begin" (mutatis mutandis about "where the tracks end and the ( Hiking) trails begin ”) is based. Originally, a transcontinental connection was planned to Coos Bay , Oregon or Eureka , California , but the construction of the route was never continued beyond Lander. In 1972 rail traffic to Lander was also discontinued.

Lander is located in central Wyoming on the banks of the Middle Popo Agie River , east of the Wind River Range and south of the Wind River Indian Reservation . The place is accessed by the US Highway US 287 and several state highways.

The site covers an area of 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²); there are no bodies of water underneath.
economy
Today Lander is a base for a number of federal institutions. The US Forest Service , the Bureau of Land Management , the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have branches here. There are also federal agencies. The National Outdoor Leadership School is based here and non-governmental institutions such as The Nature Conservancy and Wyoming Wildlife Federation have offices here.
In addition to the state sector and traditional agriculture, tourism is a major contributor to employment in the area. Due to its location at the foot of the Wind River Range, Lander serves as a starting point for campers, hunters, anglers, hikers, mountain bikers and climbers. Not only the Wind River Range , but also nearby rocky areas (such as the Sinks Canyon ) attract climbers.
In the village is the Freemont County Pioneer Museum , one of the more important museums on the Indian and European settlement history of the region and the early days of cattle farming. The music label Asthmatic Kitty Records , which was founded by Sufjan Stevens , has one of its offices here.
Lander has a small airport called Hunt Field .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, 6,867 people lived in the city of Lander. The population density was 599.9 people per km ². There were 3,036 housing units at an average of 265.2 per km ². Lander's population was 90.81% White , 0.15% Black or African American , 5.99% Native American , 0.32% Asian , 0.70% said racial , and 2.04% named two or more races. 3.48% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Landers distributed to 2794 households out of which 30.4% were living in children under 18 years of age. 51.5% of households are married, 10.1% had a female head of the household without a husband and 34.7% did not form families. 30.0% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.
The urban population was divided into 24.1% minors, 7.1% 18–24 year olds, 26.7% 25–44 year olds, 25.5% 45–64 year olds and 16.6% aged 65 and over or more. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 95.4 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.2 men.
The median household income in Lander was 32,397 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 41,958 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,602, compared with $ 20,916 for women. The per capita income for Lander was $ 18,389. 13.2% of the population and 9.9% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 19.3% of minors and 9.3% of those aged 65 and over.
