Blair came about when the Sioux City & Pacific Railroad wanted to cross the Missouri and a new city was needed across the river in Nebraska. It was named after John Insley Blair , who purchased 1,075 acres of land on May 10, 1869 from the first settlers who had settled here since 1855. He named the new city after himself. Numerous buildings were quickly built, including a. Shops and a courthouse. In addition, the first hotel, bank and newspaper were founded. The Blair Crossing Bridge over the Missouri was finally completed in 1883. The local brickworks had to produce 1.5 million bricks a year to keep up with the city's rapid growth. The four-story building of Trinity Seminary (now Dana College ) was inaugurated in 1886.
