Gering (pronounced gɪərɪŋ ) is a city and the county seat of Scotts Bluff County in the US state of Nebraska .

history

According to a prediction by the Union Pacific Railroad , the site of today's low was thought to be suitable for founding a city. Gering was founded on April 27, 1887. The first edition of the Gering Courier newspaper appeared on the same day . The city was initially called "Vendome", but it was renamed in honor of its first banker Martin Gering. After all, it took 23 years after it was founded before tracks were actually laid south of the North Platte River. Scottsbluff, located to the north, was connected to the rail network as early as 1900 by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad . Little developed nevertheless and became the county seat of the newly created Scotts Bluff County in 1888.

geography

Little is located on the North Platte River in western Nebraska on Nebraska State Highways 71 and 92 . The Wyoming border is approximately 30 km to the west. The Scotts Bluff National Monument is located immediately west of the city. Together with Scottsbluff, Gering forms the so-called twin city complex , as both cities have grown together in the course of their history. However, both are independent and administratively not linked.
