The area of Dakota City was first discovered by whites in 1804 by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark . Dakota City was founded in 1856, after Dakota County had been created a year earlier. The city was named in honor of the Dacotah Indians. The city was officially registered on April 5, 1858.
