Sergeant Bluff is located in western Iowa, 15.5 km southeast of the confluence of the Big Sioux River in the Missouri at the intersection of the three states of Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska .

The name Sergeant Bluff comes from the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the country along the Missouri. One participant, Sergeant Charles Floyd, fell ill and died here; his body was buried on a hill (en .: bluff ).
In 1830, the area east of the Missouri was bought from the local Indians and white colonization began. The present city was first permanently settled in 1852.
The settlement was known under the name Floyd's Bluff or Woodbury , until the current name Sergeant Bluff established itself as a postal address.
In 1904 the place was incorporated as an independent municipality.
