Sardis is a small town in the north of the US state Mississippi and one of two administrative centers (next to Batesville ) of Panola County . The city is about 14 km west of Sardis Lake and about 50 km south of Memphis .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Sardis had 2,038 people. 62 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 790 households and 493 families. The population density was 397 inhabitants per square kilometer. 862 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 41.9 percent white , 56.4 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and 0.5 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent said ancestry from several races. 1.5 percent of the population were of Spanish or Latin American descent.
Of the 790 households, 25.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 36.1 percent were married couples living together, 23.2 percent were single mothers, and 37.5 percent were non-families. 33.4 percent were single households and 19.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size 3.24.
The population was distributed to 26.1 percent under 18 years, 9.2 percent from 18 to 24 years, 21.2 percent from 25 to 44 years, 22.3 percent from 45 to 64 years and 21.2 percent from 65 years or older. The mean age ( median ) was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 77.5 males and for every 100 adult females aged 18 and over there were 72.1 males.
