Karl Gottfried Mäser
Karl Gottfried Mäser (born January 16, 1828 in Vorbrücke , † February 15, 1901 in Salt Lake City ) was a German Mormon theologian and educator .
Life
The son of a draftsman from the Meissen porcelain factory first attended a private school and then moved to the Kreuzschule in Dresden . After completing teacher training in Friedrichstadt and the Royal Polytechnic School in Dresden , he became a teacher in Dresden, a tutor in Bohemia and the deputy director of a school in Dresden-Neustadt.
He married Anna Mieth in 1854; In 1855 he was baptized a member of the Mormons , which is why he had to give up his position as senior teacher. Mäser emigrated in 1856 and did missionary work. He worked in London and Scotland and moved to the USA in 1857 , where he first moved to Philadelphia , then to Virginia and worked as a music teacher.
In 1860 he went to Utah , where he established a school for boys and girls and an evening school for men and women in Salt Lake City . In the following year he was appointed head of the Union Academy, which he largely expanded in 1862 and also carried out this at other schools in Utah. He later returned to Europe as head of the Mormon missions for Switzerland and Germany and was involved in the publication of the German-language church newspaper “Der Stern”.
In 1870 he returned to Salt Lake City, was involved in the establishment of the general education department of the University of Utah and after the establishment of the first church university , Brigham Young University in Provo on October 16, 1875, its rector . In this role, he presented church education in the United States at the World Exposition in San Francisco ( California Mid-Winter Exposition ) in 1894 .

- A copy of the Karl G. Mäsers memorial was inaugurated on the grounds of the Mormon parish hall in Dresden in 2001 . 51 ° 1 ′ 57.2 " N , 13 ° 45 ′ 41.4" E
- The original is in front of the Maeser Building on the Brigham Young University campus .
- The place Maeser in Uintah County in Utah was named after him.
