Jeffrey Roy Holland (born December 3, 1940 in St. George , Utah ) is an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1994 .

Life

Holland attended Dixie High School and Dixie College in St. George, Utah. He then began his missionary work in the United Kingdom . The mission president there was Marion D. Hanks . The experiences of his time in the UK made a deep impression on him. Originally wanting to become a doctor, Holland decided to become a religion teacher. On his return, Holland married Patricia Terry, whom he had already met in high school, on June 7, 1963 , at St. George Temple. The marriage had three children. Holland graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo , Utah, where he received a bachelor's and master's degree . While he was writing his master's thesis in 1966 , he was given the opportunity to teach religion at the university part-time for the first time. After completing his studies, he was hired as a teacher for the Church Educational System . His first employment brought him to Hayward , California to the institute program there. A year later he became director of the institute program in Seattle , Washington . In 1970 Holland moved with his family to New Haven , Connecticut to study at Yale University . There he received another Masters, this time in American Studies , and a Ph.D. also in American Studies. During his time in New Haven he was church active in the local community. In 1974 he became Dean of the College of Religious Education at Brigham Young University. Two years later he was appointed Church Commissioner of Education . In 1980 he became president of Brigham Young University. He remained so until 1989, when he was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy on April 1. On June 23, 1994, he was called an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, entering the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Holland published a number of books, partly supported by his wife as co-author.
