Graydon Nicholas

Graydon Nicholas , ONB (born 1946 in Tobique ) is a Canadian judge . From 2009 to 2014 he was the lieutenant governor of the province of New Brunswick and as such represented the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II , at the provincial level.

biography

Nicholas is a member of the Tobique First Nation, a Maliseet Indian. After school, he moved to Antigonish to attend the St. Francis Xavier University to study law. He continued his studies at the University of New Brunswick at Fredericton and was the first Native to graduate from the Atlantic provinces in 1971 with a law degree. In 1974 he also graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo with a master's degree in social work.

Nicholas then worked for the New Brunswick Union of Indians for several years. He was its chairman from 1976 to 1980 and its president from 1980 to 1988. In 1991, he was the first Native to be appointed to the provincial court of New Brunswick. In parallel, he was a lecturer at St. Thomas University in Fredericton until 1999 . Governor General Michaëlle Jean swore in Nicholas on September 30, 2009 as Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. His term ended on October 23, 2014.
