Herménégilde Chiasson , ONB (born April 7, 1946 in Saint-Simon , New Brunswick ) is a Canadian artist . He is one of the most important artists of the French-speaking minority of the Acadians . Among other things, he has worked as a poet , writer , film and theater director , photographer and screenwriter . From August 2003 to September 2009, Chiasson was Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick Province and, as such, represented the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II , at the provincial level.

biography

Chiasson has five university degrees: Bachelor from Université de Moncton (1967) and Mount Allison University (1972), Master from Sorbonne (1975) and the State University of New York (1981) and Doctorate from Sorbonne (1983). From 1968 to 1985 he worked for Radio Canada with interruptions . During this time he realized numerous cultural radio and television programs, he also directed several cultural institutions in New Brunswick. From 1988 he was professor of art history and cinematography at the Université de Moncton.

In addition to his professional activities in radio, television and at the university, Chiasson pursued his own artistic career. He wrote several books of poetry and plays, and was the producer and director of 20 films, most of which deal with the culture and history of the Acadians. Chiasson has received several awards, including the Prix ​​France-Acadie , the Ordre des francophones d'Amérique , the Grand Prix de la francophonie canadienne and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . In 1999 the Université de Moncton awarded him an honorary doctorate .

On August 26, 2003, Chiasson was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and on the proposal of Prime Minister Paul Martin . Martin's successor Stephen Harper announced in April 2008 that Chiasson's five-year term would be extended by one year. The reason was the hosting of the Acadian World Congress in August 2009. He held the office of Vice Governor until September 30, 2009. In 2010 he was made a member of the Royal Society of Canada .
