Arthur Foljambe, 2nd Earl of Liverpool

Arthur William de Brito Savile Foljambe, 2nd Earl of Liverpool GCB , GCMG , GBE , MVO , PC , JP (born May 27, 1870 in Compton Place, Eastbourne , Sussex; † May 15, 1941 in Cranwick Hall, Lincoln, Lincolnshire ) , known by the courtesy title Viscount Hawkesbury between 1905 and 1907 , was a British Liberal politician. He was the 16th and last Governor of New Zealand and also the first Governor General of New Zealand .

Lineage and Early Life

Foljambe was born on May 27, 1870 at Compton Place near Eastbourne in Sussex . He was the eldest son and only surviving child of Cecil Foljambe, 1st Earl of Liverpool , and his first wife, Louisa Howard, daughter of Frederick John Howard. On the maternal side, he was descended from the architect Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington . He received his education at Eton College and at the Royal Military College Sandhurst . He then joined the Rifle Brigade and served in the Second Boer War . In 1906 he retired from military service with the rank of captain .

Political career

Foljambe inherited the title Earl of Liverpool from his father in 1907 and his seat in the liberal faction of the House of Lords . In July 1909 he held the position of Comptroller of the Household until 1912 in the Liberal government from 1905 to 1915 under HH Asquit . On December 19, 1912, he was appointed governor of New Zealand , succeeding John Dickson-Poynder, 1st Baron Islington . On June 28, 1917, this office was upgraded to that of Governor General of New Zealand . In 1917 he was also appointed to the Privy Council . His term as Governor General was extended to include a visit from the Prince of Wales during his term. He resigned as Governor General on July 8, 1920 and was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB) on October 7, 1920 . His successor in office was John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe .

During the First World War, a New Zealand infantry regiment, the New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl of Liverpool's Own) , carried his title. This was set up in 1915, served in the New Zealand Division and was disbanded after the end of the war in 1919.

family

Lord Liverpool married Annette Louise Monck (1875–1948) in 1897, daughter of Henry Monck, 5th Viscount Monck . The marriage remained childless. In 1918 his wife was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE). Lord Liverpool owned Hartsholme Hall from 1909 to 1939 .

He died on May 15, 1941, at the age of 70 at his Canwick Hall home. His titles went to his half-brother Gerald Foljambe. His wife died in May at the age of 73.
