Silvia Cartwright
Dame Silvia Rose Cartwright PCNZM DBE QSO DStJ (nee Poulter, * 7. November 1943 in Dunedin , New Zealand ) was a judge at the High Court (Supreme Court) and from April 2001 to August 2006 the second female Governor-General of New Zealand .
She graduated from the University of Otago with a bachelor's degree in law in 1967 . In 1989 she became the first female judge in New Zealand's Chief District Court and in 1993 she became the first woman to appear in the New Zealand High Court . The University of Waikato awarded her an honorary doctorate in 1994 .
Since 2006 Cartwright has been one of ten international judges at the hybrid criminal court dealing with the crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 , the Extraordinary Chambers at the Courts of Cambodia based in Phnom Penh .
In 1989 she was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 2001 as Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit . She is married.
