Jerry Mateparae

Sir Jerry Mateparae GNZM QSO KStJ (born November 14, 1954 in Whanganui , New Zealand ) was Lieutenant General and Chief of the New Zealand Defense Force from 2006 and held the office of Governor General of New Zealand from August 31, 2011 to August 31, 2016 .

Early years

A tribal member of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa and the Ngāti Kahungunu , with ties to the Ngāi Tūhoe , Jeremiah Mateparae was born on November 14, 1954 in the poorer area of Whanganui . His father, Sam Andrew, worked in the city's cold store. As soon as he was born, Jeremiah's parents passed it on to the Rangiwhaiuru Mateparae and his wife Rangitunoa . He later took the last name of his foster parents. Both Jeremiah's biological father and his foster father Rangiwhaiuru were so-called apostles ministers (pastors) of the Ratana Church. Jeremiah attended Castlecliff Primary School , Rutherford Intermediate School, and Wanganui High School in turn .

Military career

In June 1972 he entered the military, completed a three-year training course as a simple soldier, graduated in 1976 from the Officer Cadet School in Portsea , Victoria , Australia and switched to the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment . He also served in the New Zealand Special Air Service .

Further training followed at the military schools of the Staff College of the British Army in Camberley , England in 1989, in 1995 at the Australian Joint Services Staff College in Canberra and in 1999 at the Royal College of Defense Studies in London . At the University of Waikato closed it in 1996 to study with the Master of Arts on the subject of international relations and strategic studies with honors.

From May 1994 to May 1995 he was stationed for the United Nations as an observer in southern Lebanon , commanded the so-called Truce Monitoring Group in 1998 , which was supposed to control the ceasefire in the civil war on the island of Bougainville in Operation Belisi , and was from December 1999 to July In 2001 under the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) in use in East Timor .

On May 1, 2002 Mateparae was promoted to chief of the New Zealand Army and on May 1, 2006 to lieutenant general. He was the second Māori to achieve this position in New Zealand. On February 7, 2011, he became director of the Government Communications Security Bureau , but quickly resigned from his position when he was appointed governor-general on August 31, 2011. His term of office ended on August 31, 2016, and Patsy Reddy was his successor .

He is married and has two daughters and three sons.
