Central catalogs of the GDR
The central catalogs of the GDR referred to a project to make books, publications and magazines from libraries of the GDR and from historical collections available for research and use more quickly and easily. The period in which the catalogs were drawn up extended from 1948 to 1990. In some cases, the holdings of foreign libraries were also accessed.
Central catalog of the GDR
The central catalog of the GDR was created for the first time in 1948 by the German State Library in East Berlin . It was divided into two categories;
- 1. Central catalog of foreign monographs
About 3,100,000 (as of 1985) foreign monographs from the year of publication 1939 and from the year of publication 1971 were included in the catalog. This also includes monographs from West Germany and West Berlin .
- 2. Central catalog of foreign journals and series
Around 35,000 titles were included in the catalog that were distributed outside the GDR as magazines and series from 1971 onwards. The catalog was also published as the Central Catalog of the GDR: Magazines and Series of Foreign Countries (ZKZ) .
The coverage of the two categories were libraries and information facilities of the GDR according to the registration order of the GDR Law Gazette I 1975 No. 24.
Central inventory of medieval manuscripts in the GDR
The central inventory of medieval manuscripts in the GDR was processed by the German State Library in Berlin from 1972. Up to the year 1500 manuscripts were included in the central inventory (i.e. central directory) that were located in libraries and institutions of the GDR.
Central register of estates
The central directory of the bequests was edited by the German State Library in Berlin from 1985. Legacies in the libraries and institutions of the GDR were included in the directory.
Central catalog of music historical sources of the GDR
The central catalog of music historical sources in the GDR was maintained by the Saxon State Library in Dresden . All handwritten and printed sources with music-historical content up to the year 1830 were included in the catalog. In 1985 about 90,000 items were recorded in the catalog. Support was also provided for the International Music Sources Dictionary ( RISM ). The objects were found in around 350 libraries, archives and institutions in the GDR with sources on music and music history.
Central catalog of literature on the history of socialism and the labor movement
The central catalog of literature on the history of socialism and the labor movement was created by the German State Library in Berlin and the German Library in Leipzig . Monographic publications that appeared up to 1945 have been included in the catalog. In 1985 the catalog contained around 28,000 titles.
Central catalog of foreign maps and atlases
The central catalog of foreign maps and atlases was drawn up by the German State Library in Berlin from 1962 onwards. In 1985 the catalog comprised 13,881 objects. The sources of the catalog were the libraries of the GDR. The holdings before 1945 and the new additions to the German State Library in Berlin were not included.
Central catalog at the Saxon State Library
The central catalog at the Saxon State Library was edited by the Saxon State Library in Dresden from 1960. In 1985, 967 770 proofs of ownership could be counted. The sources of the catalog were 283 libraries in the districts of Cottbus, Dresden and Karl-Marx-Stadt (today: Chemnitz).
Central catalog Saxony-Anhalt
The central catalog Saxony-Anhalt was created from 1948 by the university and state library in Halle (Saale) . In 1985, 1 553 064 records of ownership could be counted. The sources of the catalog were 255 libraries in the districts of Halle and Magdeburg.
Thuringian Central Catalog
The Thuringian Central Catalog was created by the Jena University Library from 1955. In 1985, 912,000 proofs of ownership were counted. The sources of the catalog were 155 libraries in the districts of Erfurt, Gera and Suhl.
Leipzig central catalog
The Leipzig Central Catalog (also: Central Catalog Leipzig) was created by the University Library in Leipzig from 1957. In 1985, 538,000 proofs of ownership could be counted. The sources of the catalog were 74 libraries in the Leipzig district, whereby the holdings of the Karl Marx University Leipzig and the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig were not included.
Central catalog of the districts of Neubrandenburg, Rostock and Schwerin
The central catalog of the districts of Neubrandenburg, Rostock and Schwerin was created by the University Library in Rostock from 1960. In 1985 proof of ownership was recorded on 340,000 pieces of paper. Sources were 83 libraries in the districts of Neubrandenburg, Rostock and Schwerin.
Specialized central catalog for physical culture and sport
The technical central catalog for physical culture and sport was created by the central library for physical culture and sport in Leipzig from 1957. In 1985 the catalog comprised 116 728 titles. The department's monographs and journals were found in 24 libraries.
Central catalog of old astronomical prints
The central catalog of old astronomical prints in the libraries of the GDR was published by the Archenhold-Sternwarte Berlin-Treptow between 1987 and 1991. Prints in the libraries of the GDR that had been published up to 1700 were included in the catalog. Prints were also included that could be referred to as astronomical-astrological interpretive writings.
Sources were 81 libraries in the GDR. The titles were in alphabetical order and cataloged according to the rules of the Prussian Instructions . The catalog was continued beyond these local borders and is available on the Internet with around 9,000 titles at www.astw.de.
