Sir Anand Satyanand , GNZM , QSO , KStJ (born July 22, 1944 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand politician and lawyer. He was Governor General of New Zealand from August 2006 to August 2011 . He was previously a high judge and ombudsman .

Satyanand was the first Governor General of Asian descent and the first Catholic to serve in this office. He comes from a Fiji- Indian family, grew up in Auckland (North Island) and studied at the University of Auckland , where he received a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1970 .

He then worked as a lawyer for twelve years , including for a time in the Crown Solicitors Office . In 1982 he was appointed judge of an administrative unit . In 1995 he was appointed ombudsman and served as such for two five-year periods. On August 23, 2006 he took over the office of Governor General to succeed Dame Silvia Cartwright . His term of office ended on August 30, 2011.

Anand Satyanand is married and has three children.

As Principal Companion since 2006 he has been the highest-ranking member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Queen's Service Order .
