inscription

Heinrich Hug (born September 1, 1803 in Thalwil ; † August 3, 1833 in Frenkendorf ) was the first honorary citizen of the canton of Basel-Landschaft .

The son of a pastor from the canton of Zurich was a senior clerk in the young canton of Basel-Landschaft and had already been proposed as an honorary citizen. In the battle of the Hülftenschanz during the separation of the cantons of Basel , he died in a battle with troops from the canton of Basel-Stadt . His honorary citizenship could therefore only be granted to him posthumously .

A writing plate on the Hülftendenkmal commemorates him with the inscription:

In this place
Dr. Heinrich Hug
High Court Clerk
in Death Honorary Citizen of the
Canton of Basellandschaft

Freedom was his bride
for her he gladly went to his
death
