history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1323, the settlement was then called Zunzkon and probably originally belonged to the Homburg rulership . Both name and affiliation changed several times over the next few centuries. The landmark of Zunzgen is the 'Büchel', a 30 m high hill. It has not yet been possible to date the book. According to legend, Attila the Hun King is buried there, but it is more likely that it is a tower hill from around 900.
Around 1700 about 200 people lived in Zunzgen, in 1900 the population was 685. In 1899, the Basel iron furniture factory was founded, which would become the most important employer in the village in the following century. The population of Zunzgen grew evenly in the first half of the 20th century, in 1956 the first 1000 inhabitants were counted. Since then the population has increased considerably: in 1970 Zunzgen had 1660 inhabitants, in 1990 there were 2349. For newcomers, Zunzgen is particularly interesting because of its proximity and good connections to Basel . A small stream, the Diegterbach, flows through Zunzgen. The Diegterbach takes its name from the neighboring village of Diegten, which lies south of Zunzgen. The Diegterbach lies in the bottom of the Zunzgen valley.
