Gion Deplazes

Gion Deplazes (born March 22, 1918 in Surrein near Sumvitg ; † October 8, 2015 in Chur ) was a Swiss writer who wrote his works in Rhaeto-Romanic .

biography

Gion Deplazes was born as the first son of Giachen Mudest Deplazes and Christina. Solèr born. When he was nine, his mother died after a long illness. From 1933 to 1939 he attended the monastery school in Disentis ; then the seminar in Chur . He studied history, German literature and education at the universities of Freiburg im Üechtland and Zurich .

In 1949 he finished his dissertation on the subject of "History of linguistic teaching materials in the Romance Rhine region" and began to teach history and German at the grammar school in Chur. He later became vice principal of the grammar school. After his retirement, he taught Romansh at the Chur women's school for seven years.

1953–1963 Deplazes was editor of the literary series “Nies Tschespet”, 1963–1988 President of the Societad Retorumantscha and 1984–1990 member of the board of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW). Occasionally he was also a lecturer for Romansh at the University of Zurich and the University of St. Gallen .

Gion Deplazes had been married to Carmelia Freiman since 1950; the couple had three children. He died on 2015 at the age of 97.

Deplazes first appeared in journalism in 1942. Deplazes' work includes both prose and poetry and dramatic works. His collected works in twelve volumes have been available since 2003. Some of his works have been translated into German, French, Swedish, Romanian and English. The Swiss Literary Archive has been looking after his estate since 1994 .
