Cla Biert (born July 26, 1920 in Scuol , † March 19, 1981 in Sent , pronunciation [ klaː'biərt ]) was a Romansh writer.

Life

Cla Biert was born on July 26, 1920 in Scuol, in a peasant family. From 1936 to 1940 he attended the teachers' college in Chur . During this time he met the later writer Andri Peer , with whom he was a friend until death.

After the teachers' seminar, Cla Biert worked in Scuol as a primary school teacher (1941–1946), and from 1943 studied higher education in Zurich , Geneva and Lausanne . In 1947 he became a secondary school teacher in Ftan , moved to Zuoz in 1951 and to Chur in 1956, where he had lived with his family since 1956.

From 1975 until his death he had a serious illness and several operations. In 1978 he retired from school and returned to the Engadin . He died of this disease on March 19, 1981 in Sent.

Cla Biert is an important and committed exponent of Romansh literature and culture. This is documented, among other things, by his literary and journalistic work. Cla Biert was an employee and editor of the student newspaper Il Sain Pitschen (German: The Little Bell ), wrote for various magazines and numerous newspapers, in Romance, German and other languages. He worked as an editor on radio and television.

From 1967 to 1971 Cla Biert presided over the Uniun da scripturs rumantschs (USR, German Romanian Writers' Association ) and was editor-in-chief of the publication Novas litteraras .

Music also played an important role in Cla Biert's life: he collected folk songs from the Engadine and Val Müstair and, together with his sister Stasia, his wife Angelica and his daughters Nesa and Aita, was a well-known Engadin songwriter . His son Risch Biert is a pianist.

As an actor, Cla Biert was active in the theater group La Culissa . Together with Men Rauch and Jon Semadeni, he wrote and composed the cabaret pieces La Panaglia (1951, Das Butterfass ) and La travaglia dal docter Panaglia (1954, Die Mühsal des Doktor Butterfass ).

The novel La müdada (1962, Die Wende ) is an important work in Romansh literature and is one of the first novels in this language. It is about the young man Tumasch Tach , torn between moving away and staying in the valley, as well as the social change in the Engadine around the middle of the 20th century.

Cla Biert has also written many stories. In Betschlas malmadüras and Suot l'alosser , but also in La müdada , Cla Biert allowed erotic elements to flow into Engadin literature, which in some cases led to provocations in the readership.

His works have been translated into German, French and Italian.

Cla Biert's mother tongue was the Lower Engadine idiom Vallader , and it is in this idiom that he wrote his works. He consciously and purposefully expanded his Romance vocabulary and followed the development of orthography and sound in the idiom Vallader, as expressed, for example, in a letter to Reto Bezzola , Romance scholar and dictionary author:

It must be noted that Cla Biert requires a very demanding vocabulary in his work.

Awards

In 1955 Cla Biert was honored with the Swiss Schiller Foundation Prize. In 1968 the Cuminanza Radio Rumantsch Prize followed and in 1976 the recognition prize of the government of the Canton of Graubünden .
