Jon Semadeni (born May 30, 1910 in Vnà , † February 24, 1981 in Samedan , pronunciation [ ˌjɔn sɛ'ma: dɛni ]) was a Lower Engadine book and radio play author , director , playwright and actor .

Life

Jon Semadeni was born in 1910 in the village of Vnà in what is now the Lower Engadine municipality of Valsot . He attended the teachers' seminar in Chur and trained as a secondary and high school teacher (literature and history) at the universities of Zurich , Geneva and Siena . He worked as a teacher in Zillis , Andeer , Scuol , at the Evangelical Middle School in Samedan (1960–1975) and at the Lyceum Alpinum in Zuoz (1966–1977).

In 1940 he married Mengia Demarmels. This marriage resulted in four children, including his daughter Leta Semadeni , who also became a writer.

In 1941, Jon Semadeni founded the mobile theater company La Culissa . In the Engadin as well as in Chur, Zurich and Bern , she played mainly dramas that Jon Semadeni had written himself. In addition, La Culissa has also made radio plays on Rhaeto-Romanic radio for decades . In addition to his teaching and theater work, Jon Semadeni has written novels, short stories and contributions for radio, television and the press.

Jon Semadeni advocated the Romansh language in a variety of ways . He himself wrote in the idiom Vallader .

Jon Semadeni died in Samedan in the Upper Engadin in 1981 . His estate is administered by the Swiss Literary Archives .

The themes of his dramas are modernization, speculation and the abuse of power. In addition to productions of his own dramas, he adapted many foreign material for the stage, for example material by Molière , Gotthelf , Andersen and Chekhov . Jon Semadeni was a writer, director and actor in the group La Culissa and is considered to be the innovator of Romanesque theater.

In the prose works Der Bannwald and The Red Cat , the focus is on coming to terms with the past, guilt and conscience.

In addition to dramas and novels, Jon Semadeni wrote short stories, worked on cultural films and worked as a textbook author and translator.
