Men Rauch (born January 29, 1888 in Scuol , † October 4, 1958 ibid) was a Grisons Romanesque writer, poet and editor.

Life

Men Rauch was born on January 29, 1888 as a farmer's son in Scuol. After attending secondary school at the Schmidt Institute in St. Gallen and the cantonal school in Chur , he studied from 1908 to 1919, interrupted by the First World War from 1914 to 1918 - Rauch served as first lieutenant  -, civil engineer at the ETH in Zurich . During his student days, he also attended courses in philosophy , literature , art history and music .

After completing his studies, Men Rauch worked as a geometer and engineer in the Lower Engadine and in the canton of Valais . Among other things, he was responsible for the construction of Samnaunerstrasse , which was completed in 1912. He married Barbulina Nodèr, their marriage remained childless.

From 1918 until the end of his life, Men Rauch worked and lived permanently in Scuol. In addition to his job as an engineer, he also worked as an editor.

Men Rauch was mayor of Scuol from 1926 to 1938, after which he was a councilor in Chur. He was one of the first opponents of the electric power plants in the 1940s and 1950s and was a leading activist in the Lia Naira (German Black League ).

Men Rauch was the initiator and co-founder of the Museum d'Engiadina Bassa in Scuol, which opened in 1956.

Writing and theater

Men Rauch was a poet, storyteller, cabaret artist and songwriter. He founded the Gazetta Ladina and was its editor from 1922 to 1939. From 1945 to 1958 he was editor of the Fögl Ladin , together with Robert Ganzoni.

Men Rauch wrote hunting stories in a popular style ("In bocca d'luf", 1941, German Weidmannsheil ), anecdotes ("Fanzögnas da Calögnas", 1955, German spinning mills from Calögnas ) as well as humorous and satirical poems ("Il battaporta", 1944, German The Door Knocker ). He created collections of biographies under the title “Homens prominents ed originals” (1935 and 1951, German celebrities, original personalities ).

Together with Jon Semadeni and Cla Biert he wrote the programs for the cabaret "La Panaglia" (1951, German Das Butterfass ) and "La travaglia dal docter Panaglia" (1954, German Die Mühsal des Doktor Butterfass ). In 1952, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the liberation of the Lower Engadine, he wrote the open-air play “La chanzun da la libertà” (German The Song of Freedom ). Men Rauch did not only write for the theater, he was also active as an actor and musician in the theater group La Culissa . Men Rauch also translated German-language plays into the Lower Engadine idiom Vallader .

Songs

Men Rauch has published two volumes of humorous Romance songs in 1925 and 1950. He also wrote the song for the Scuoler custom Hom Strom , which has now become a tradition :

Vico Torriani set five texts by Men Rauch to music for his album Allegra-allegra (1975). Linard Bardill dedicated an entire CD to Men Rauch in 1988: Omagi a Men Rauch (German homage to Men Rauch ). Also on his CD Tamangur from 1996 there are several songs with texts by Men Rauch. Linard writes about Men Rauch:

In 2014 Angelo Andina recorded several poetry texts by Men Rauch in his album “Che bel mumaint” (German for “What a beautiful moment” ), for example “Eu e Tü” (German for “I and you”).
