history

Collection of the Alpine Club

The Swiss Alpine Museum is all about the mountains.

The museum was opened in 1905 in the town hall of the Äusseren Stand on Zeughausgasse in Bern, after the Bern section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) took the initiative in 1902 and commissioned a museum commission with the implementation. The idea and purpose of the museum corresponded to the aim of the SAC not only to open up the Alps for mountaineers, but also to explore them.

1933–1934 the new museum building was built on Helvetiaplatz in Bern's Kirchenfeld district. The house is now a listed building as an example of the new building . From 1990 to 1993 the museum was rebuilt and refurbished. A permanent exhibition was created on two floors and space on one floor for constantly changing special exhibitions. Every eight to ten months, a new topic about the Alps and the Alpine region was up for debate. Particularly noteworthy are the successful exhibitions “Glacier in the greenhouse” and “Room free. Alpine hotels between demolition and departure ».

Current concept

From September 2011 to March 2012 the museum was rebuilt again and reopened with a new concept and a contemporary orientation. The permanent exhibition has given way to the special exhibitions (700 m²) on two floors. Just as new to the concept is the “ Bivouac ” exhibition area , the “speedboat” of the large “museum steamer”, in which small experimental exhibitions take place with quicker changes. The museum, which has changed its name to the Swiss Alpine Museum, sees itself as a platform for Alpine and mountain topics. The focus is on the different approaches and perspectives on the topic, which are constantly being explored anew, because not only natural history and geographical questions arise, but also cultural, social, art-related and especially contemporary views and sensitivities must and should be discussed .

The “las alps” restaurant, which offers specialties from the Alpine arc, and a newly designed museum shop have also been part of the museum since March 2012.

The Swiss Alpine Museum Foundation, which was established in 1933, is responsible for the Alpine Museum. The founders are the Swiss Confederation, the Canton of Bern, the City of Bern, the Swiss Alpine Club SAC and the Bern Section of the SAC.
