Georges Poulet

Georges Poulet (born November 29, 1902 in Chênée , Liège province , † December 31, 1991 in Brussels ) was a Belgian-British Romance studies and literary scholar.

life and work

Poulet received his doctorate in 1924 from the University of Liège with Les Relations entre les personnages dans le roman balzacien . From 1927 to 1952 he was professor of French literature at the University of Edinburgh , from 1952 to 1957 at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and from 1957 to 1969 at the University of Zurich . From 1968 he also taught in Nice. In 1970 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Poulet worked in close contact with the Geneva School of Literary Criticism ( Marcel Raymond , Albert Béguin , Jean Rousset , Jean Starobinski , Jean-Pierre Richard ).

His estate is in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern .

He was the brother of the writer and literary critic Robert Poulet (1893-1989).
