Jean Rousset

Jean Rousset (born February 20, 1910 in Geneva , † September 14, 2002 ibid) was a Swiss Romance studies and literary scholar.

life and work

Rousset studied humanities (and law) at the University of Geneva. His teachers were Albert Thibaudet and Marcel Raymond . From 1938 to 1943 Rousset was a French lecturer at the Universities of Halle and Munich, and from 1949 assistant at the University of Geneva. He received his doctorate in 1953 on La Littérature de l'âge baroque en France. Circé et le paon (Paris 1953; Spanish Barcelona 1972; Italian Bologna 1985) and was Professor of French Literature at the University of Geneva from 1953 to 1976 as a colleague of Marcel Raymond and Jean Starobinski .

Rousset was a member of the Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome. He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Lausanne, Cluj-Napoca , Paris (Sorbonne), Venice and Trento.
