Jean-Pierre Richard (born July 15, 1922 in Marseille , † March 15, 2019 in Paris ) was a French literary scholar and writer .

Life

From 1941, Jean-Pierre Richard attended the École normal supérieure . He graduated from the Agrégation de lettres in 1945 and obtained his doctorate in 1962. He taught French literature at various universities in Scotland, including Edinburgh (1946–1948), London (1949–1958), the Institut Français de Madrid and Vincennes (1968–1978). In 1978 he was elected professor at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Richard was considered a representative of the "critique thématique". His research was influenced by Gaston Bachelard and Georges Poulet , with whom he had worked in Edinburgh. Richard was interested in the specific sensory perception of the world as it is articulated in a literary work. The title of his first major study, "Littérature et Sensation" (1954), contained this programmatically. In particular , he read authors of the 19th and 20th centuries - Stendhal , Gustave Flaubert , Eugène Fromentin , Stéphane Mallarmé , Marcel Proust - with the textual closeness and accuracy that was peculiar to him.

Richard was close to the so-called Geneva School of Literary Criticism ( Marcel Raymond , Albert Béguin , Jean Starobinski , Jean Rousset , Georges Poulet).
