Douains is a French municipality with 513 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy . The inhabitants are called Duniens .

geography

Douains is located on the eastern edge of Eure, 70 kilometers northwest of Paris , 50 kilometers southeast of Rouen , about 20 kilometers east of Évreux and 7 kilometers southwest of Vernon .

history

Douains was first mentioned in the 11th century as Duni and Dunos . In 1264 it was mentioned as Doens . The place name was probably derived from the Germanic name Dodenus .

In August 1026, Duke Richard II (966-1027) donated the church in what was then the village of Dunos to Fécamp Abbey . The church included stables and three farms. In the 12th century, Douains was part of the Pacy-sur-Eure castellany . In what is now the municipality of Douains, there were three fiefdoms before the French Revolution (1789–1799) , Douains, Brécourt and La Sablonnière.

In 1809 the hamlets of Boisset-Hennequin (now Saint-Vincent-des-Bois ) and Brécourt were incorporated.

Attractions

The Château de Brécourt is located on the road to Vernon, it is a 17th century castle surrounded by a moat that has burned, bombed and served as a holiday colony over the centuries. Today it is used as a hotel-restaurant and in 1967 it was entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques ("historical monuments"). The castle can be reached through an avenue of lime trees . The main courtyard is planted like a baroque garden .

The original Church of Notre-Dame already existed in the 11th century. However, nothing remains of the building. Most of the current building dates from the 17th century. In the 19th century the church was rebuilt and parts of the destroyed church of the hamlet Boisset-Hennequin were built into the north wall of the church of Douains. Two openings in the south wall date from the 14th century.

In Douains there is the Les Jardins du Souvenir animal cemetery , which opened in 1989 and contains around 400 grave sites. In 1999 it was expanded.

economy

Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) apply to pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider (Cidre de Normandie and Cidre normand) in the municipality .
