Giverny is a French municipality with 494 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy . The place belongs to the arrondissement Les Andelys .

geography

Giverny is located on the eastern edge of the Norman department of Eure at the confluence of the Seine and Epte , 5 kilometers west of the Vexin français regional nature park (fr: Parc naturel régional du Vexin français ), 63 kilometers northwest of Paris , 6 kilometers southwest of Gasny and 4 kilometers east of Vernon .

Origin of name

Giverny was first mentioned in 671 as Warnacus , in 863 as Wariniacus and around 1026 as Givernacus . The place name is composed of the originally Germanic name Warinus and the Celtic place name ending -acum .

It is more of a Gallo-Roman place name "* GABRINIACU". The second component is the well-known suffix "* -ACU" of Celtic descent * -āko .

history

In the 7th century, wine was grown near Giverny . The vineyards belonged to Saint-Wandrille Abbey and were given to the county by Abbot Teutsind in the 8th century . In 863 the Abbey of Saint-Denis owned land. The Abbey of Saint-Ouen in Rouen also owned land in the Epte Valley in Giverny and Gasny since the 9th century. Before 1066, the Saint-Ouen Abbey received the vineyards and before the 13th century it received the Sainte-Radegonde Church. In 1678 it was finally attested that the Giverny fiefdom belonged to the Saint-Ouen Abbey. But there was a second fiefdom in Giverny that belonged to a family that named itself after the village.

In 1793 Giverny received in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government .

Giverny- Limetz station was on the Gisors  - Vernonnet railway line , which was inaugurated on July 15, 1869. Passenger traffic was discontinued in March 1940, freight traffic in 1941. During World War II (1939–1945) , the railway was used by German troops to transport the materials for the construction of the Atlantic Wall .

Attractions

Claude Monet's house and garden, who was inspired here for some of his most famous motifs.

The house and garden of Claude Monet were in the supplementary list of official 1976 historical monuments registered. The property is also classified as site classé (natural monument). Around 1890 Monet bought three parcels of land on which there were three houses. He set up his garden there and built a house between 1911 and 1918 that is now a museum. The first part of the garden he set up was the Clos Normand , an enclosed garden full of roses , peonies , gold lacquer , nasturtiums , clematis , poppies , tulips and irises . The second part was a water garden, with a pond, a Japanese bridge covered with wisteria , water lilies , a weeping willow , bamboo and rhododendrons .

When Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, the old Hôtel Baudy was just an épicerie with a bar. It was named after the owners at the time. In 1891 the building was converted into a hotel with 20 rooms and mainly housed painters from the United States . The rose garden of the Hôtel Baudy was also laid out towards the end of the 19th century. Today the building is used as a restaurant .

The property is adjacent to Monet's property. The garden was laid out in 1988 after paintings from the 1890s. Since 2009, the Musée des impressionismes Giverny has been showing temporary exhibitions in collaboration with the Musée d'Orsay .
