The Musée des impressionnismes Giverny is an art museum in Giverny in the French department of Eure . It is primarily dedicated to the art of impressionism .

history

The museum is located in Giverny, where the painter Claude Monet lived from 1883 until his death in 1926. Influenced by Monet, several painters from the United States settled in the town at the end of the 19th century and formed an artists' colony. In 1992, the American art collector Daniel J. Terra opened the Musée d'Art Américain near Monet's house . In the years that followed, it showed a series of exhibitions with works by American Impressionist artists who had lived in Giverny or had special ties to France. The museum, operated by the Terra Foundation for American Art , continued to exist for years after the founder's death in 1996, but ceased operations at the end of 2008.

In 2009 the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny was founded as the Établissement Public de Coopération Culturelle (EPCC) . It was created as a joint project of the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Conseil général de l'Eure (district government of the Eure department), the Conseil général de la Seine-Maritime (district government of the Seine-Maritime department ), the regional administration of Hauts-de-France , the Vernon Municipal Association , the City of Vernon and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris . Since then, the new museum has been using the rooms of the former Musée d'Art Américain. These were made available by the Terra Foundation until 2014 and then transferred to the Établissement Public de Coopération Culturelle with the surrounding properties. In this association, the regional administrations bear the costs of running the museum, the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Musée d'Orsay support the museum with loans and scientific expertise.

The aim of the museum is to show the history of impressionism and post-impressionism , to present the artists and their works, and to show the influence of this art on subsequent generations. Every year, there are usually two temporary exhibitions that either focus on one artist or are dedicated to an overarching topic. In addition, the museum began to build up its own art collection.

architecture

In the exhibition rooms of the museum

The museum is located in Giverny at 99 rue Claude Monet. Visitors enter the museum through an elaborately designed garden with hedges and flower beds. Architect Philippe Robert from the architectural office Reichen et Robert designed a two-story museum building that fits into the hillside of the site. The architecture hardly stands out; Glass surfaces, partially overgrown limestone walls and green flat roofs determine the external appearance. Inside the building there is a spacious entrance area with cash register and museum shop, three large exhibition rooms and the restaurant with an outside terrace on the ground floor. In the basement there is a conference and concert hall for around 200 people and smaller exhibition rooms. Several other buildings belong to the museum, such as the former home of the painter Lilla Cabot Perry . However, these buildings are not open to visitors.

collection

Maximilien Luce: L'Île à Bois, Kermouster, Lézardrieux

When the museum was founded, the main task was to organize temporary exhibitions. Initially, there was no provision for a separate art collection. In the following years, mainly through foundations, the museum received a small collection of its own, which is closely related to the theme of the house. In addition, the museum was able to acquire some works itself, most of which were related to exhibitions shown in the house. The Friends of the Société des amis du musée des impressionnismes Giverny have been supporting the museum with donations since 2014 .

In the opening year 2009, the museum acquired a drawing by Pierre Bonnard showing his wife Marthe Bonnard together with Claude Monet. In 2010 the museum received the two paintings La Briqueterie and L'Île à Bois, Kermouster, Lézardrieux by Maximilien Luce as a gift . Claire Denis, the granddaughter of the painter Maurice Denis, added the paintings of her grandfather Soleil blanc sur les blés and Portrait Claude Monet to the collection. The museum also bought the painting Reflet de soleil sur la rivière from the same artist . In connection with the exhibition by the contemporary Japanese Nihonga painter Hiramatsu Reiji shown in the museum in 2013, the museum acquired a block of 22 paintings, five screens and works on paper. After the Caillebotte exhibition shown in the house, the museum asked for donations to purchase the four paintings Parterre de marguerites shown there , which were originally used as decoration in the artist's dining room. These works were acquired for the collection in 2016. The two landscape paintings L'Epte, Giverny and La Ferme by John Leslie Breck were also given as a gift from the Terra Foundation for American Art . In December 2016, the museum received a drawing by the artist from Charlotte Hellman, great-granddaughter of the painter Paul Signac.

The museum also has a collection of photographs. These include 60 works by Bernard Plossu showing Claude Monet's garden. Other photographic works in the collection are by Olivier Mériel, André Ostier and Henri Foucault .
