history
Pont-de-l'Arche was founded in the 9th century to serve as a bulwark against the invading Normans . From 862 a wooden bridge was built over the Seine and Eure , which was secured on the banks with fortresses (Châtelets) . By 869 the bridge and châtelets were completed. The community developed at the bridge and the associated towpath .
After an official Reformed church was established in Rouen in 1557 and in Évreux in 1559 , Pont-de-l'Arche followed suit. The Protestant church in Pont-de-l'Arche existed no longer than the repeal of the Edict of Nantes with the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685.
During the Second World War (1939-1945) Pont-de-l'Arche was taken on June 13, 1940 by the German Wehrmacht . In the summer of 1944, during Operation Overlord , the town was bombed by the Allied Air Force .
