Venezia Santa Lucia train station
Venezia Santa Lucia Train Station ( Italian Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia ) is Venice's main train station . It is a terminus and the only train station on the island of Venice.
It gets its name from the Santa Lucia Church , which originally stood on this site and was demolished in 1861 for the construction of the train station. A memorial stone in the middle of the square reminds of the former church.
history
The current appearance of the station is the result of a series of designs that have been created by the architect Angiolo Mazzoni since 1924 and through a competition in 1934. The winner of the competition was Virgilio Vallot (1901–1982). Both architects worked closely together on the construction of the station, especially the reception building and the hall, from 1936 to 1943. The construction was continued after the end of the war under the direction of the architect Paolo Perilli and completed in 1952.
Transport links
The station is connected to the Venezia Mestre junction station on the mainland via the Ponte della Libertà (Bridge of Freedom) and thus also to the rest of the FS network.
As part of the TEN axis No. 6 (Lyon – Milan – Venice – Trieste – Budapest) and the PAN corridor No. 5 (Venice – Maribor – Budapest – Kiev), Venice is also to be connected to the planned high-speed lines Verona – Venice and Venice –Triest are connected.
