General

The beginnings of the company go back to the aircraft division of the Hughes Tool Company , which began with the production of light helicopters in 1955. In 1984 the helicopter production of Hughes Aircraft was sold to McDonnell Douglas , which in turn became part of the Boeing Company in 1997 . In 1999, Boeing then sold the helicopter production to MD Helicopters Holdings Inc. (a subsidiary of the Dutch RDM Holding ). This sale included the single-engine MD 500E , MD 530F and the MD 520N and MD 600N models with the NOTAR system as well as the twin-engine MD Explorer helicopter.

Boeing retained the rights to the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and the NOTAR patent .

In addition to the main plant at Falcon Field Airport ( ICAO code : KFFZ), the helicopters are also manufactured by the Hongdu Aviation Industry Group (HONGDU) in Nanchang ( People's Republic of China ) and by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Turkey .
