The Cathedral of Acquapendente or the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher ( Italian Basilica Santo Sepolcro ) is a church in   central Italian Acquapendente . The originally Romanesque church serves as a co- cathedral of the Viterbo diocese with the title of a minor basilica .

history

According to tradition, the foundation of the church goes back to St. Mathilde (895–968), the mother of Otto I the Great . On her trip to Rome she stopped in Acquapendente and had a church built here as part of her pregnancy; the crypt comes from this time . The current three-aisled church dates back to the 12th century and was initially used as a Benedictine monastery church. With the creation of the Acquapendente diocese in 1649, the church was elevated to a cathedral. The Romanesque basilica was rebuilt several times in the course of the 18th century and redesigned in Baroque style ; the current classical facade was designed by Nicola Salvi . The original structure of the church became visible during the restoration work that became necessary after the bombing of World War II. It turned out that the ships were previously divided by two rows of columns, which differed in shape and number, four columns on the left and three on the right.

The cathedral bears the title of the minor basilica from immemorabili . With the amalgamation of various dioceses in 1986 into the diocese of Viterbo, the cathedral became a co-cathedral. The former pilgrimage church is now again a station on the Via Francigena .

Furnishing

Above the entrance there is a niche with a copy of the bust of Pope Innocent X , the original of which by the sculptor Alessandro Algardi from 1652 is kept in the Bishop's Palace. Two bas-reliefs on the front of the anvil are valuable , presumably by Agostino di Duccio (1418–1481). On the right wall, near the sacrament chapel, hangs an altarpiece made of glazed terracotta by Jacopo Beneventano, which was commissioned in 1522 for the church of San Pietro and which came to the cathedral in 1881. Behind the altar are the valuable wooden choir stalls , which were made between 1685 and 1688 by the sculptor Matteo Monsù. At the lower end of the central nave is a travertine baptismal font from the Church of San Vittoria, which depicts the twelve apostles.
