Agostino di Duccio
Agostino di Duccio , also Agostino da Firenze (* 1418 in Florence , † around 1481 in Perugia ) was an Italian sculptor during the Renaissance .
Life
Duccio was a mercenary in his youth and led a rather turbulent life, later he became a pupil of Donatello . He created his first important work in Rimini (1449-1457), where he decorated the interior of the Tempio Malatestiano , which was just rebuilt by Leon Battista Alberti . For the Oratorio di San Bernardino in Perugia he created remarkably beautiful works in the years 1457–60, mostly as bas-reliefs . In 1462 he returned to Florence, where he completed a large sculpture for the cathedral, which, however, was lost. There he was also commissioned to create the David sculpture, now known as Michelangelo's masterpiece . But he failed at this task. During his final years he lived and worked in Perugia again.
