The Volsiner Mountains (ital. Monti Volsini ) are a low mountain range on the border of the Italian regions of Latium , Tuscany and Umbria . They are about 100 km north of Rome and 100 km south of Siena and enclose Lake Bolsena .

The mountain range is named after the Etruscan city of Volsinii .

The Volsiner Berge were created by the volcanic activity of the Apparato Vulcanico Vulsinio, which began about 600,000 years ago. Eruptions took place in the volcanic craters of Montefiascone , Latera , Lamone and Lake Mezzano. Lake Bolsena is a caldera that was created by the collapse of a magma chamber .

Numerous hot sulfur springs in the area around the low mountain range still bear witness to volcanic activity. The houses of the communities in the vicinity of the Volsiner Mountains are largely built with the building material tuff .
