The lavaret ( Coregonus lavaretus ) is a species of fish from the genus Coregonus that is endemic to Lac du Bourget and Lac d'Aiguebelette . It used to also occur in Lake Geneva .

features

The Lavaret reaches a standard length of 40 centimeters. The back is slightly curved. The dorsal profile of the head and mouth is straight. The back color is bluish to bluish green. The flanks are silvery with a bluish tinge.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Lavaret is now limited to the Lac du Bourget and the Lac d'Aiguebelette in the French department of Savoie .

Way of life

The lavaret spawns in shallow water near the shore area in December.

Danger

Lavaret was also found in Lake Geneva until the early 20th century . Here, however, it disappeared due to eutrophication and overfishing . The IUCN classified the Lavaret as endangered in 2008. Although no information is currently available on a particular hazard, the introduction of alien coregons in Lac du Bourget and Lac d'Aiguebelette could become a potential threat.

nomenclature

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the binomial Coregonus lavaretus was used for almost all European and for some North American Coregons. According to the rules of the ICZN , this is not justified, however, as the name Lavaret was used by Guillaume Rondelet for the fish from Lac du Bourget as early as 1555 . In 1997 the taxon was rewritten by Maurice Kottelat .
