Guillaume Rondelet

Guillaume Rondelet , also Rondeletius , (born September 27, 1507 in Montpellier , † July 30, 1566 in Réalmont ) was a French anatomist and, as a naturalist, primarily a marine biologist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Rondelet ".

Life

Rondelet, the son of a herb and spice merchant who died young, studied philosophy at the University of Paris from 1525 . In 1529 he began studying medicine at the university in his hometown and was appointed procurator there in 1530. In 1530 he studied anatomy and surgery with Johann Guinter in Maringues , where he practiced as a doctor. After his return to Montpellier, he was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate, went to Florence in 1539 and became personal physician to the Cardinal of Tournon in 1540 . Through his mediation, he was appointed professor at the Medical Faculty in Montpellier in 1545, where he was elected Chancellor in 1556 and campaigned for the establishment of the local anatomical theater .

Accompanied by the cardinal, he traveled to Holland and Italy. His observations on the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts became the basis for his descriptions of marine animals.

Later famous students of Rondelet were Ulisse Aldrovandi and Carolus Clusius . Even Georg Marius was a student Rondelets in Montpellier. He corresponded with Jean and Caspar Bauhin , Conrad Gessner , Leonhard Rauwolf , Matthias de L'Obel , Jacques Daléchamps and Pierre Richer de Belleval , among others .

Honor taxon

Charles Plumier named in his honor the genre Rondeletia the plant family of the redness plants (Rubiaceae). Carl von Linné later took over this name.
