Matthias de l'Obel
Matthias de l'Obel , Latinized Lobelius (* 1538 in Lille , † March 3, 1616 in Highgate near London ), was a Flemish botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Lobel ".
Live and act
Lobelius studied medicine in Montpellier . After traveling through southern France , Italy , Switzerland , Germany and England, he worked as a doctor in Antwerp and Delft . Together with Pierre Pena , he published Stirpium adversaria nova in 1570 , which he later translated into Dutch. The description that the sailors returning home from America smoked tobacco to quench hunger and thirst, to restore their strength and to refresh the spirit is known from this.
Lobelius was the personal physician of James I of England .
Charles Plumier named the plant genus Lobelia ( lobelia ) in 1703 in honor of Matthias L'Obel . The name was later adopted by Carl von Linné .
