(10057) L'Obel is an asteroid of the main belt . It was discovered on February 11, 1988 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .

The asteroid was named on May 23, 2000 after the Flemish botanist and personal physician of Jacob I of England , Matthias de L'Obel (1538–1616), who was also named with the Latinized name Lobelius . In 1570, in his work “Stirpium adversaria nova”, he described the habit of seafarers returning from America to smoke tobacco .
