Francesco Maria Molza

Life

Molza studied at the Universities of Modena , Bologna and Rome . Molza's way of life in Rome moved his parents to bring him back home in 1512 - without a degree. He was married there shortly afterwards. After four years of marriage, Molza left his wife and returned to Rome. Pope Leo X's attention was drawn to him through his poems and soon afterwards he accepted Molza into the circle of artists, writers and scientists that had formed around him.

During this time Cardinal Ippolito de 'Medici acted as Molza's patron ; after his death, Alessandro Farnese took over this role. Around 1540 Molza returned to his family in Modena and died there of syphilis on February 28, 1544 at the age of 54 .

Contemporaries report that Molza's granddaughter, Tarquinia Molza , even surpassed her grandfather in talent.

reception

Molza is considered one of the more important poets of his century; his lyrical work as an exact reflection of his time. His love poetry in particular is characterized by sensitivity and passion; depending on who they were addressed to; Faustina Mancina (one of his mistresses ) but also the noble lady Camilla Gonzaga should be mentioned here.

Hardly less appreciated were Molza's canzons , which were characterized by a wealth of bold and powerful images that set them apart from their predecessors.

Molza's epigrams , published under the title “ Capitolo in lodo de 'fichi ”, appeared for the first time as an appendix to Pietro Aretino'sDialoghi ” and were edited with congenial comments by the writer Annibale Caro .
