Vernaccia di Serrapetrona

The name Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG refers to Italian red sparkling wines (dry and sweet) from the provinces of Ancona and Macerata , Marche region. The sparkling wine ( Spumante ) has had a "controlled and guaranteed designation of origin " ( DOCG ) since 2004 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014. Before that, the wines (since 1971) had the simpler DOC classification.

The denomination prescribes the following grape variety for sparkling wine :

  • at least 85% Vernaccia Nera
  • a maximum of 15% other red grape varieties - individually or together, that are approved for cultivation in the Marche region.

The wine must mature for at least 18 months, of which at least six months in the bottle, before it can be sold.

Cultivation

Cultivation and vinification of these sparkling wines are only permitted in the province of Macerata in the Marche region . The approved growing areas are in: Serrapetrona and in parts of the municipalities of Belforte del Chienti and San Severino Marche .
