Maria entered the Klarenthal monastery near Wiesbaden in 1499 , which cost her father 300 guilders . The choice of the Klarenthal Monastery, which was far from the ancestral lands of the Hanau-Lichtenberger, could be related to the fact that her aunt on her father's side, Margarethe (* May 15, 1463, † May 26, 1504), with Count Adolf III. von Nassau-Wiesbaden (born November 10, 1443 - † November 6, 1511), the Vogt of the monastery, was married. Maria was its abbess from 1512 to around 1525 . She gave up this office again during her lifetime. It is not entirely clear whether she died in 1526 or, because she no longer held an office, the sources are now silent about her. In any case, nothing has been handed down about her after 1525. She is also not listed in the monastery necrology , which suggests that she no longer lived there at the time of her death.

The background to the resignation could have been the massive financial difficulties of the monastery during this time, as well as the anti-monastery attitude of the beginning Reformation and the associated uprisings of the peasants .
