Reinhard Soisjuste Suchier (born July 20, 1823 in Veckerhagen , † July 13, 1907 in Hanau ) was a German high school teacher, classical philologist , local historian and numismatist .

Origin and education

Reinhard Suchier came from a Huguenot family and spent his childhood in Karlshafen . He attended high school in Rinteln and then studied classical philology and history in Marburg and Berlin . In 1845 he passed the exam and in 1846 received an internship at the grammar school in Hanau , a school where he was to teach until his retirement in 1879. On 25 March 1848 he was with a thesis on human sacrifice among the Greeks in Marburg doctorate . Reinhard Suchier was married.

Scientific work

His next work also dealt with ancient philological topics. By working with the coin collection of the High State School - including the Camp'sche coin collection - he turned to regional historical research and published on corresponding numismatic topics. The standard work for the coinage of the County of Hanau-Münzenberg was created . This led him further to the genealogy of the Hanau family and heraldic research . Corresponding standard works were also created here.

From 1872 he participated in the archaeological excavations of the district association for Hessian history and regional studies under the direction of Friedrich Karl Hausmann in the Roman cemetery of the fort and vicus in Rückingen . In the excavation report he took over the description of the graves and the coins found. In 1873 he became a member of the association and was soon a member of the board. Between 1874 and 1900 he gave 45 scientific lectures in the association. From 1890 to 1903 he was chairman, from 1894 honorary chairman. Under his chairmanship, a museum was set up in Hanau for the first time , the forerunner of the Hanau Historical Museum .

Honors

In 1897 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class. In 1898 the Prussian minister of education honored him with the title of professor .
